Registered Nurse (RN)
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Resident Care, Administrator/their designate, the Registered Nurse Provides nursing care requiring specialized knowledge, skill and judgement, both in assessing needs and in planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing effective direction and supervision to the Registered Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides and nursing attendants within the Nursing Department. The RN collaborates with all members of the Health Care Team in meeting the physical, social, and emotional needs of the Residents. The RN is required to perform duties in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Practice, College of Nurses of Ontario, and Long-Term Care Legislation and all applicable North Centennial Manor policies as well as all other regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
❖ Must hold a current Certificate of competence from the College of Nurses Ontario.
❖ Must assume responsibility for personal growth and development through:
o Available courses, workshops, and conferences
o Attending in-service programs.
❖ Previous experience in geriatric, rehabilitations, long-term care nursing and or other completion of a recognized course in geriatric nursing would be an asset.
❖ Possess proficient skills in co-ordinating and supervising the work of other nursing personnel.
❖ Be able to meet the requirements in regards to physical and mental health relative to performance requirements.
❖ Bilingualism is an asset.

Standards of Performance:
The employee will:
❖ Maintain an effective relationship with other public bodies such as the hospital, Extendicare, Porcupine Health Unit, etc, including residents and families of residents on an ongoing basis.
❖ Maintains an effective working relationship with the staff of the Home in the fulfillment of their respective functions, in matters within his/her jurisdiction.
❖ Be knowledgeable and complies with the Fire, Health and Safety regulations, is familiar with the fire alarm system, fire evacuation procedures., proper use of the fire extinguishing equipment and all
other procedures designed to ensure the security and protection of the residents and staff in the home.
❖ Assist with maintaining a safe and comfortable environment within the home, this includes:
o Immediate remedy of hazards through notification of maintenance personnel or the Administrator after hours.
o Where the hazard is not an immediate danger, filing of the appropriate repairs requisition for maintenance personnel.
o Promoting adequate standards of cleanliness.
o Enforcement of Health and Safety Regulation within the Nursing Department.
❖ Delegates activities to the Registered Practical Nurses and/or others who contribute to the provision of resident care. The delegation is based upon an understanding of the other support staff’s role, qualifications and job description.
❖ Assists in the training, supervision and in-service education of nursing service personnel.
❖ Assists the Director of Resident Care with the nursing department time schedules when necessary.
❖ Develops and modifies residents’ care plans based on the assessed needs of each resident and the prescribed medical regime.
❖ Responsible for the assessment of the health status of the residents through recognition of signs and symptoms and institutes remedial actions as follows:
o Immediate notification of the Medical Director or Physician on call when condition assessed is of an acute and emergency nature.
o Arranges appointments with the Medical Director on his regular visits when condition does not warrant immediate attention.
o Treats the assessed condition according to the orders from the Medical Director.
❖ Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the Director of Resident Care upon request, as per Collective Agreement.
❖ Responsible for the nursing care of acutely ill residents.
❖ Responsible for preparing accurate and complete documents including:
o Record of nursing observations and care.
o Medication records
o Accident reports
o Accident reports on staff members for WSIB records.
o Admission/Discharge/Transfer forms.
o Vital sign records.
❖ Assists other nursing personnel when required.
❖ In emergencies performs duties as assigned.
❖ Performs the basic skills in accordance with the prescribed list in Appendix A of the Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses as updated by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
❖ Performs other related Registered Nurses’ duties as may be assigned.
❖ Responsible for safekeeping of drug and narcotics keys.
❖ Responsible for the proper care of equipment used in providing care to residents.
❖ Provides nursing care in accordance with administrative policies, physicians’ orders, established standards and recognized nursing principles.
❖ Act as an ambassador on issues related to the Home outside of the Home.
Position Responsibilities:
❖ Performs the responsibilities of the position in accordance with Bill 140 and all other employment laws and regulations associated with providing care in a Long-Term Care facility.
❖ Ensures individualized resident care is provided in a manner reflective of the Home’s Mission Statement and Values.
❖ Responsibility for the safe, accurate receiving, storing, administration and discontinuing of medications and treatments provided to residents, while maintaining complete, current and accurate applicable documentation.
❖ Assisting with regular assessments of resident needs through the development, updating, and evaluation of resident care plans and restorative plans (including long- and short-term goals).
❖ Participating in all aspects of resident care, while continually ensuring the safety of residents.
❖ Assisting in maintaining an environment to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial needs of the residents.
❖ Assessing resident need for recreational and rehabilitation programs, as appropriate, and encourages resident participation in same.
❖ Assisting with supervision and serving of meals, nourishments, dietary supplements and documenting associated data.
❖ As team leader, functioning as a liaison between all members of the care team and the Registered Nurse, while promoting and encouraging all team members to respect the individuality of each resident and their independence.
❖ Establishing a good rapport with residents (families and significant others), offering support as required.
❖ Ensuring daily, the neatness of residents’ rooms (dressers, clothes closets), utility rooms, dining rooms, lounges, dining areas and bathrooms.
❖ Obtains appropriate professional development to ensure skills and abilities in LTC are maintained and enhanced.
❖ Assists members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure the needs of residents are met.
❖ Participates in all aspects of Infection Prevention and Control by following established practices such as ensuring the labelling of personal care equipment, cleaning and disinfection of resident care equipment and restocking of infection control supplies.
❖ Participates in continuous quality improvement of the Home and associated care services by:
o Ongoing collection and documentation of CQI data
o Using supplies in a cost-efficient manner as per product/policy guidelines
o Offers suggestions to registered staff, DOC, administrator regarding resource allocation
o Participating in continuing education, relevant to LTC, to ensure skills and abilities are maintained and enhanced.
❖ Serves on committees related to resident care.
❖ Assists in the evaluation of nursing staff under their supervision.
❖ Maintains regular attendance at work.
❖ Performs other related duties, as required.
❖ Protects own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety. Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Salary:
