Podcast 1 – CARE, Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses
CARE Centre started in September 2001 in Toronto as one of Ontario’s first bridge training programs for internationally educated professionals. CARE Centre assists Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) to become registered as RNs and RPNs in Ontario and achieve employment. The organization supports pre-arrivals through the PASS program and supports IENs who are currently in Ontario through the STARS program. CARE Centre works with healthcare organizations to create educational opportunities and networking for members.
Podcast 2 – National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS)
The National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) is a not-for-profit organization that offers a streamlined process for Internationally Educated Nurses to submit their documents and provide them with the tools to apply for Canadian nursing registration. If the IEN wants to work as a nurse in Canada, he/she will need to complete an application with NNAS. One can apply for a licence in a Canadian province of choice as a Registered Nurse (RN), a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN).
Podcast 3 – College of Nurses of Ontario
To practise as a Registered Nurse (RN) or registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in Ontario, one must be a member of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and hold a certificate of registration. Nurses are required by law to deliver competent, ethical and professional services, and are accountable to the public through the CNO. The CNO is the regulatory body for nursing practice in Ontario. The CNO regulates nursing to protect the public interest and sets requirements to enter the profession, establishes and enforces standards of nursing practice, and assures the quality of practice of the profession and the continuing competence of nurses.
Podcast 4 – Educational Supports at CARE
CARE Centre provides a variety of educational opportunities for its clients. This podcast will give an overview of the many offerings we have for professional development, language supports and exam preparation courses. Cara Malla, the Language Specialist at CARE, will delve into the specific language supports that are available.
Podcast 5 – Employment
The ultimate goal for every internationally educated nurses is to find a job either as a registered nurse or registered practical nurse. CARE has developed programming that will help to prepare the IEN for future employment. In this podcast Lourdes Vicente will highlight, the Observational Job Shadowing program which is a unique learning opportunity for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who are CARE Centre members who are partnered with an expert nurse for two to three work shifts and get to observe first-hand the nursing profession in Ontario. We will also speak with Shirley Bell, a clinical educator from St. Michael’s Hospital who will outline ways which an IEN can prepare for their job search and give suggestions that would enable one to have a great interview.
Podcast 6 - Career Development for Internationally Educated Nurses
Our clients’ goal is to earn their RN or RPN registration. In this podcast we will hear from a representative from the WeRPN (the registered practical nurses association) Norma Tomlin and also a former Case Manager from CARE. Norma will outline the benefits of joining the WeRPN, and provide an overview on how the IEN can grow and develop their careers by learning how to develop a career plan.
